The BC legislature passed a history-making law, giving same-sex spouses legal status when it comes to their children. The Family Relations Amendment Act and the Family Maintenance Enforcement Act made BC the first province in the country to ensure homosexual couples have the same privileges and responsibilities for child support, access and custody as heterosexual couples. New Democrat MLA Tim Stevenson, a gay minister in the United Church of Canada, said the laws actually strengthens families. And he said, it brought about an immediate change in his life. (Earlier, BC passed a law allowing same-sex couples to adopt.)
