Prime Minister Jean Chretien said he felt it was important to be in New York to mark the one-year anniversary of the September 11th terrorist attacks. Twenty-four Canadians died when the World Trade Center twin towers were struck by commercial airliners in the worst terrorist act in US history. Chretien said he wanted to show his solidarity with Canadians who lost loved ones, and with the United States.
