Five days after the Rodney King verdict in Los Angeles, a night of looting and violence rocked downtown Toronto. It was sparked by the police killing of a black man. After a rally at the US Consulate to protest the killing, a crowd of one thousand took over Yonge Street. When it was over, 25 people were in custody and storefronts along the downtown shopping district were in ruins. Spokesmen for the black community said the police killing of blacks smacked of racism -- they counted 14 deaths in Montreal, Toronto and Ottawa in the past six years. This is sound of police sirens and breaking glass.
