Preston Manning issued a rallying cry on Jan. 29 for Reform party troops to give up their party to a broader, right wing coalition aimed at defeating the Chretien Liberals in the next federal election. Manning made the plea after United Alternative supporters developed a new party plan at a convention in Ottawa. Delegates named the coalition the Canadian Alliance and adopted policies similar to those of the Reform party. Reform party members voted to accept the Alliance in a March referendum.
