A trip from Toronto to Montreal turned into a ride of terror for passengers aboard a Via Rail train. Forty-five passengers were injured when fire engulfed the engine's fuel tanks and spread to the first-class cars behind it. A rail had gashed the tanks, the fuel had ignited and the train went hurtling through Brighton, in Eastern Ontario, like a flaming comet. Dr. Marc David (dah-vihd) of Montreal was riding in the first class compartment. He said there was panic as passengers scrambled to get from the first car to the second. (Police later charged a man and a teenager with criminal negligence causing bodily harm.)
