There was standing ovation after standing ovation for honorary Canadian citizen Malala Yousafzai (mah-LAH'-lah YOO'-suhf-zeye), as she addressed a joint session of Parliament. Known worldwide simply as Malala, the Pakistani Nobel Peace Prize winner called Canadians heroes for the way they have welcomed refugees. She said families like hers, from all over the world, are forced to flee their homes because of violence. (Yousafzai was awarded honorary citizenship as an acknowledgment of her tireless work in the name of girls' education.
